Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that occurs in the deep veins of the body, mostly in the legs. It's something to worry about in particular for truckers, who have to remain sitting mostly still for extended periods of time with few opportunities for regular exercise. DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism, which can lead to death or permanent and painful symptoms. Wearing compression socks or compression tights can help limit the risk of developing DVT, but general health and fitness is a more assured way to ensure continued good health.

Embolisms cam develop with no direct symptoms, so truckers in particular should be conscious of the risks they face from this terrible illness. Some vendors sell special seat cushions that will help increase the blood flow to your legs. Don't wear your seat belt too tight (or too loose) in order to help increase the blood flow. When you make a stop, take the time to stretch, run or even do jumping jacks to keep your legs active and to improve your general health.

Maintaining good heart health can also help ensure that you maintain a healthy blood pressure and have less risks of developing dangerous blood clots. Eat well and make sure that you go to the doctor regularly to check for the symptoms of DVT. Spread awareness of the disease among your fellow truckers to keep them on the road and out of the hospital. Older people are far more likely to develop DVT than the young, so be more diligent about it the older you are.
