As a trucker, you might not see very many similarities between your lifestyle and say that of a lawyer, for instance, or anyone with a normal desk job sitting in a cubicle all day every day, for that matter. But there is one glaring similarity that is hard to overlook, and that is both types of jobs are not exactly conducive to a lot of exercise. When you think about the kind of lifestyle most adult Americans live, it’s not hard to see why obesity has been on the rise for the last few decades.
But as a trucker, it’s especially important for you to get enough exercise because as you’re out on the road, stopping in the middle of the nowhere for meals and breaks, you have fewer options of healthy meals and so that, coupled with no exercise, can rapidly lead you down the road towards heart disease and just general bad health overall.
Although you may feel that you have no time to exercise, if you realize the importance of regular physical activity in your life you’ll make the time, especially because it really doesn’t take much to stay healthy. You don’t have to run for an hour every day on the treadmill, but even a brisk walk a couple of times around the motel you’re staying in or into the little town’s grocery store to buy some fruit where you’re taking a break, can make the difference between pounds gained by the end of the year and maintaining a steady weight.
If you’re aversion to exercise is difficult to overcome, make it fun. Disguise the true purpose of exercise from your mind by making it into a game—organize a game of soccer or basketball with your buddies, or pick up a new hobby such as golf or Frisbee.
