Trucking is a unique lifestyle: no cramped office cubicle, no 9 to 5 job, lots of time on the road, and plenty of unique health concerns. It can be easy to neglect your health while you are out on the road, but being aware of the wear and tear on your body by hours of driving will help you reduce the negative side effects of a life behind the wheel.
The first key to maintaining good health for truckers is to drink plenty of water. Of course, everyone should make sure that they are consuming plenty of water to better their health, but truckers who drink at least 2 quarts of water a day are able to maintain healthy discs in their backs. This means that you may not be as susceptible to back pain and degenerative conditions of the spine. To promote the health of your back it is also important that you practice good posture while behind the wheel and take a break every few hours to stretch out the muscles in your back as well. Toning up your abs will also help to keep back pain in check.
It's easy when you spend a lot of time sitting in the cab to forget that you need to get out and exercise as well. You should plan to set aside a time to do some walking every couple of days to help keep your weight in check and to relieve some stress. Bringing food with you is also a good idea to prevent you from having to load up on unhealthy fast food on a regular basis. While trying to meet deadlines, don't forget to pay attention to your well-being too.
