Many truckers have a pet with them in the cab when they are on the road. Pets help relieve stress and loneliness when away from loved ones for long periods of time. Most furry truckers are cats and small dogs, although larger dogs are also popular. There are some traveling birds, reptiles, rodents, and even the occasional pig or skunk on the road.
Dogs are often favored on the road because they offer not only companionship but also can be effective burglar alarms. Some dogs are also alarm clocks, but cats have been known to do this as well. Cats are generally easier to care for in small places.
Grooming and vet care is easiest when the driver is able to be home on a regular schedule. Emergency vet care can be found on the road by asking the state police or rest stop employees. Make sure to keep up to date vet records with you. These sometimes are used as "papers" when crossing borders with your pet.
It is recommended that you choose national brand pet foods so that it can easily be found when on the road. Canned food is a good choice because it travels well and is an extra source of water. Don't ever let pets drink from puddles, especially in parking lots. Bring bottled water or provide fresh water at rest stops. Ice cubes can also be used in hot weather. Dogs can be trained to have regularly scheduled potty stops. Don't forget that they also need to be exercised. Use clumping litter for cats helps keep the odor level down. Cats must either be declawed or provided with a scratching toy or they will make shreds out of your cab interior.
