Let’s face it – being on the road most of the time does not exactly lend itself to a healthy lifestyle. While some truckers have a bit of room in their schedule to exercise and eat well, others are working against the clock constantly. Still, you must consider that you only have one body that needs to be treated properly. Even though all those fast food joints are tempting, taking the time to eat healthy is really the best way to ensure your longevity.
Some truckers have room inside of their rigs to store mini-refrigerators and other cooling devices. If you have this luxury, you really have no reason not to stock your fridge with fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. However, if you are forced to eat on the road, your options may not be quite so flexible. Realistically, you will probably be faced with eating take-out food at least four times per week – but guess what? Eating take-out food can be healthy too. How? Almost every fast food chain will accommodate your menu request if you just ask. When you roll up to a popular burger joint, see if you can find a wrap or grilled chicken sandwich on the menu. If you can, order this healthier option. If not, ask the person that waits on you to hold the mayo, freshly grill your meat (most will do this), and place it all on a bun (if you are eating carbohydrates – if not, skip the bun).
You can also choose to eat at Mexican fast food chains (healthier if you skip the sour cream and cheese), or you can roll up to a grocery store and hit the salad bar. If snacking is something that you are worried about, look at grocery store shelves for healthy chips, hand held fruits, and items that are low in salt, calories, and carbohydrates. As you can see, there are many ways to eat healthy while you are on the road, but in the end the choice is really up to you.
