Fatigue is a constant problem for many truckers. Logging long hours behind the wheel can be mind-numbing as you cross state lines in one continuous drive on the interstate. But staying awake is extremely important for not only the safety of the trucker, but also of everyone else on the road. So when the inevitable sleepy eyes come up, how do you combat them and manage to stay alert?
Many truckers result to taking a number of stimulants to stay awake for long periods of time. While this might be effective, it isn't the best option for your health. Stimulants can become addicting and disturb your rest cycles, so they should be used sparingly if at all.
Another tip directly from other truckers is to chew gum or eat when you are feeling sleepy. The motion of chewing will help to keep you awake, and if you are consuming foods you will experience a rise in your blood sugar that should also help you feel more energized. Just make sure that you are choosing healthy foods for a snack. Listening to music loudly is another trick that has been used by other drivers. Sing along or listen to an engrossing book on CD. Remember, if you are truly too tired to be behind the wheel it is in the best interest of everyone for you to pull off and take a break. Take a walk or take a nap, but never continue to drive when you are beginning to fall asleep. Such a mistake could prove to be fatal to yourself or others.
