Truckers and Their Pets

Continuous tight schedules, time away from home and family, and the trucker 'blues' mount up, causing stress. Researchers know pets reduce stress. Today, more and more trucking companies are finding it difficult to hire drivers and are willing to permit pets as an enticing 'perk.'

Pet truckers are companions and help prevent some truckers from making regrettable misjudgments out of loneliness. Truckers with pets speak highly of their trucking companions. Most road pets are dogs or cats but some snakes, ferrets, raccoons and exotic birds have hit the road. One trucker reportedly had a pig as his traveling companion. Dogs make great security alarms and provide an opportunity for the trucker to get some exercise. Cats seem to have built in timers and awaken their trucker owners so they can be on their way. Truckers with pets are willing to give up some of their precious space for custom sleepers and all of the accoutrement needed to meet their pet's needs.

It is recommended that truckers bring their pet's medical records along in case of emergency. Trucker must always be ready to show that their pet is up-to-date on required vaccinations. The staff at truck stops can generally give the name of a good veterinarian if needed. Be sure to keep your pet on the same food as their digestive systems can become upset with changes in diet. When choosing a pet to ride with you, take into consideration the amount of care required. You may need to reconsider getting a pet that needs brushing and regular grooming. High energy dogs probably aren't a good choice either. If you are looking for a pet-friendly company, visit the business' on-line site or call them. You may soon be on the road with a new companion to help you wile away the hours.
