Health & Fitness For Truckers

There seems to be a growing concern in regards to the health of truckers, especially those “over the road” or “long haulers”.  For years, truckers have distinguished themselves as hearty eaters, especially when they hit those truck stops with the fabulous homemade meals!

However, due to the fact that truckers are setting in one position for such long periods of time, and like the rest of us, have not paid that much attention to a “healthy” diet, there are growing numbers of truckers developing heart and circulation problems.  Of course, the most important thing to do is consult your physician.  But, there are things you can do on your own to help prevent problems from occurring in the first place.

If you are overweight, be honest enough to recognize it, and start taking fruit and veggies for snacking instead of eating chips and candy bars.  Consider cutting down on your food portions when eating a whole meal.  Unnecessary weight is a major concern for all walks of life and all professions.  And, it is also a known fact that most of us get very lax in any form of real exercise.

Exercises for a trucker can be as simple as stretching the arms while driving.  When at a rest area, get out and take a walk.  You can also do some stretching exercises that will enhance the leg circulation, as well as keeping your back muscles relaxed and healthy.  If stopped for overnight, take another walk in the morning and do more stretches before starting on the highway.  You will find yourself more alert and have more energy as well.
