Truckers have one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. The industry is vital to our economy. More that 75% of long haul truckers are over 40, and spend 20+ days on the road monthly. This makes getting health care difficult.
Truckers make up a large percent of death related deaths. Accidents, as well as health related problems, make up the statistics. Obesity, high blood pressure, heart problems, lung problems and cholesterol are some of the most common health concerns in the industry.
The solution seems to be a healthy lifestyle. Carry fruit and veggie snacks in a cooler in your rig. These can easily be replenished at supermarkets in ready-to-eat packages. Order salads and baked/broiled entrees when at the truck stop instead of burgers and fries. For fitness, walk or jog to and from your rig; do sit ups in the bunk and carry hand weights. Many exercises can be done in the privacy of your rig. Limit caffeine and eliminate cigarettes.
Many companies allow pets to travel. A pet is a part of home on the road, and can help with the exercise routine. They need exercise too.
Walking and playing with your pet can be a fun form of exercise, as well as a welcome break from the driver's seat. Sometimes a few minutes of play can be more refreshing than a nap.
Do what you can to live a full, healthy life. Start slowly, and look for more ways to improve your physical and mental health, because life is GOOD.
