Exercise and Diet for Truckers
Stop at any truck stop across the United States and you will see a common trend: overweight truck drivers are very prevalent. The trucking industry has one flaw that is killing the drivers. The problem is how most drivers eat. Because of Department of Transportation rules for driving times (also called Hours of Service), drivers usually eat fast food while driving. This habit has caused the ranks of overweight drivers to swell.
According to several studies, truck driving has the highest fatality rate of all professions. One in three accidents caused by truckers is due to exhaustion or drowsiness at the wheel. Exercise, no matter how little, helps your body stay healthier. A good diet allows your body to stay more alert and nutrients helps to maintain strong muscles.
You need to get as much exercise as your schedule allows. If you can get at least three fifteen minute walks in per day, you would be more physically fit, as well as being more likely to lose weight. You need to eat healthy greens, fruits, and vegetables. Cut down on starchy foods and foods with sodium and sugar. When you stop at a truck stop for a meal, park as far away from the restaurant as possible. This gives you an opportunity for a good brisk walk in two directions. When you eat at the truck stop, order fresh fruits and salads. If you have an opportunity to stop and buy vegetables, buy the ones you like to eat raw. Cut them into small chunks and stick them in your refrigerator. When you get hungry while driving, stop and take a fifteen minute walk. When you get back into the truck grab some raw vegetables to eat while you drive.
Following these simple steps will help you to stay healthier and more alert while driving. Regardless of your profession, your safety should always be more important than your job.
